Personalized Oral Appliances
Dr. Helal and Dr. Colton create custom-fitted night guards designed to reduce pressure on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and relieve the jaw soreness or facial pain that many patients experience.
Our Norwell office fabricates precision oral appliances tailored to each patient’s bite. Worn during sleep, these removable acrylic devices help minimize the effects of teeth grinding (bruxism), protect the teeth from further wear, and provide lasting relief from TMJ-related discomfort.
TMJ disorders are generally classified into three categories:
- Myofascial pain – soreness or chronic pain originating in the muscles responsible for jaw movement, frequently associated with teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)
- Internal derangement of the joint – may signal a displaced articular disc, a jaw dislocation, or damage to the condyle within the joint
- Arthritis – a degenerative or inflammatory condition affecting the temporomandibular joint itself
Common signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders, which are often aggravated by stress, may include:
- Frequent headaches
- Cheek or jaw soreness and tenderness
- Pain in or around the ear area
- Persistent facial pain
- Jaw stiffness or tightness
- Clicking or popping when opening the mouth
- Jaw locking or limited range of motion
- Discomfort or difficulty while chewing
